The United States has announced that, starting 2 September 2025, most nonimmigrant visa applicants – including those renewing their visas – will be required to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer.

The update was shared by the US Department of State and marks a shift from the more flexible visa application procedures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which had allowed many applicants to renew visas without appearing at the embassy.

Officials say the change will affect a broad range of visa categories, though specific exemptions may still apply. The requirement aims to strengthen border security and ensure applicants meet eligibility standards.

The move could have significant implications for frequent travellers to the US, including students, businesspeople and tourists who previously benefited from the interview waiver policy.

Embassies and consulates are expected to provide further guidance in the coming weeks regarding how the policy will be implemented in individual countries.

The US government is encouraging visa applicants to plan ahead and schedule appointments early, as demand for interviews is likely to increase after the policy takes effect.
