Antigua and Barbuda’s police force will expand its canine unit with the acquisition of four additional dogs trained to detect firearms, narcotics and explosives, Cabinet announced Friday.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the expansion is aimed at strengthening crime prevention and enhancing public safety across the country.

“The Cabinet approved a recommendation from the Honourable Attorney General and the Minister responsible for the police to acquire four additional dogs for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda’s canine unit,” Merchant said during the post-Cabinet briefing.

The new additions will include two firearm detection dogs, one narcotics detection dog and one explosives detection dog.

“The new additions to the unit will include two firearm detection dogs, one narcotics detection dog, one explosives detection dog, along with training for both dogs and handlers,” Merchant said.

Once integrated, the unit will expand to a total of 15 dogs.

“This will expand the unit to a total of 15 dogs, significantly enhancing the force’s operational capabilities,” he said.

Merchant said the move is intended to bolster law enforcement response and deter criminal activity.

“The additions will bolster crime-fighting capacity across Antigua and Barbuda, providing critical support in detecting firearms, explosives and illicit substances,” he said.

The enhanced K-9 unit is expected to play a key role in border security operations, targeted crime investigations and routine policing activities.

Merchant added that the expansion forms part of the government’s broader public safety strategy.

“The enhanced K-9 unit will improve public safety, strengthen law enforcement response and serve as a deterrent to criminal activity,” he said.
