Let’s be honest. Small Caribbean nations have limited leverage when negotiating with the world’s largest superpower. Whether we like it or not, the United States holds far more political and economic influence.

Instead of trying to project an image of being the toughest country in the room, governments should focus on securing the best possible deal for their people.

If Washington is providing financial assistance, allowing strict security screening, rejecting anyone with a criminal background, and giving Antigua and Barbuda the final say on who enters, then the priority should be negotiating the strongest protections and benefits—not political theatre.

Real leadership isn’t about making headlines. It’s about making practical decisions that protect your country while recognizing geopolitical realities.

Sometimes the smartest move isn’t pretending you have all the power—it’s knowing how to negotiate wisely with those who do.

Do you agree, or should Antigua and Barbuda continue resisting U.S. pressure?
