Tropical Depression Likely as Atlantic System’s Development Chance Rises to 80 Percent

A tropical wave in the central Atlantic is likely to become a tropical depression within the next two days as conditions become increasingly favourable for development.

The National Hurricane Center said at 8 p.m. Tuesday that showers and thunderstorms associated with the system, designated AL92, were showing signs of organization about 700 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

The disturbance is expected to move westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic. Its formation chance has increased to 60 percent over the next 48 hours and 80 percent over the next seven days.

Elsewhere, a short-lived tropical depression or tropical storm could form in the high-latitude central Atlantic through Wednesday from another system designated AL93.

A third tropical wave just off the coast of West Africa is also producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some development is possible as it moves westward or west-northwestward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

That system has a 10 percent chance of formation within 48 hours and a 20 percent chance over the next seven days.

There were no active tropical cyclones in the Atlantic as of Tuesday night.
