Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel on Friday visited His Majesty’s Prison, where she met with recently reinstated Prison Superintendent Albert Wade to discuss matters relating to the administration and treatment of persons in custody.

The meeting also included a workshop focusing on the use of force, ethics and the treatment of prisoners, as well as the application of provisions concerning time spent on remand when determining sentences.

The discussions highlighted the importance of ensuring that prison officers understand their responsibilities and adhere to established legal and professional standards in the management of inmates.

The issue of remand deductions was also addressed in keeping with the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Sentencing Guidelines, which provide guidance to judicial officers on the crediting of time spent in custody prior to sentencing, where applicable.

Superintendent Wade was recently reinstated to the position of Superintendent of His Majesty’s Prison. He previously served as Superintendent of the institution and returns with significant experience in prison administration and the wider security sector.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Judiciary and His Majesty’s Prison and to promote professionalism, accountability and respect for the rights and dignity of persons in custody.
