Shop stewards and workers from the Transport Section of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) gathered at Freedom Hall today for a meeting focused on identifying common challenges and forging collective solutions to improve working conditions across the sector.

Also in attendance were General Secretary David Massiah and Deputy General Secretary Chester Hughes, who both underscored the importance of unity and proactive advocacy. In his remarks, Hughes urged workers to prioritise the formation of Health, Safety, and Wellness Committees, noting that such structures are essential to safeguarding workers’ rights and promoting holistic well-being in the workplace.

He expressed deep concern for the mental and emotional well-being of workers who at times, are placed under tremendous stress. He encouraged participants to take a comprehensive look at the needs of section members and to design initiatives that directly respond to those realities.

One passionate member called for greater solidarity among workers at both the air and sea ports, emphasising that united action is key to securing fairer working conditions and equitable treatment across the sector.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the section to plan its participation in the Union’s upcoming Annual Delegates Conference, scheduled for September. Workers expressed a strong commitment to ensuring their voices are heard and their issues are brought to the forefront during the conference.
