The death of 21-year-old Kenyah S. Potter has prompted an outpouring of condolences across Antigua and Barbuda and beyond, with his mother, former United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate Gladys Potter, saying the family has been deeply moved by the support.

Kenyah, an Antiguan who was living and studying in West Seneca, New York, died Saturday after reportedly drowning while swimming at Buffalo Harbor State Park.

As the family grapples with his sudden death, Potter said messages have poured in from people in Antigua and Barbuda, the United States and St. Lucia — reflecting the impact her son had on those who knew him.

“Kenyah brought so much bright energy, joy, and love into this world, and it means everything to us to see how many hearts he touched in Antigua, USA, St. Lucia,” she said.

Potter described the response since his death as overwhelming, with relatives, friends and well-wishers reaching out through telephone calls, prayers and messages.

“We want to express our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, phone calls, and messages we have received since the tragic passing of our beloved Kenyah,” she said.

The grieving mother acknowledged that the family has been unable to respond individually to many of those who have contacted them.

“If we have not replied or answered you directly, please know it is only because our emotional state makes it hard to find the words right now,” Potter said.

“We see your messages, we feel your support, and we are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.”

Kenyah was reportedly swimming in the outer harbor at Buffalo Harbor State Park when he disappeared beneath the water. His body was subsequently recovered during a search involving multiple agencies.

His family is now asking for continued prayers as they mourn and remember his life.

“Thank you for honoring his beautiful spirit and for standing with our family. Please continue to keep us in your prayers,” the family said.

Antigua.news extends condolences to Gladys Potter, the Potter family and all those mourning Kenyah’s death.
