Shawn Mussington has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the 2020 murder of his ex-partner, Simone Whyte-Barrington.

Justice Tunde Bakre handed down the sentence on Monday, with a review possible after 20 years. A jury had found Mussington guilty in March following a two-week trial.

Whyte-Barrington, a Jamaican hairdresser, was fatally stabbed at her workplace on Market and Tanner Streets on 14 November 2020.

Witnesses described a turbulent relationship and said Mussington continued to pursue her despite her attempts to end the relationship.

During the trial, Mussington claimed he had been abused and blamed alcohol and emotional distress for his actions. He apologised to the court, stating he truly loved Whyte-Barrington.

The jury rejected his defence. He will now serve his sentence behind bars.
