Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that his administration has already prepared draft legislation to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that without safeguards the technology could be turned to destructive ends.

Speaking on Point FM, Browne described AI as a powerful equaliser that can support artists, writers and professionals, but stressed the need for proper oversight. “Anything and everything has risks, they have downsides, and the issue is about regulations and making sure that we have laws,” he said, noting that draft AI laws have been drawn up to address “any nefarious use of AI.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged public concerns over plagiarism and over-reliance on generative AI tools. He cautioned that while applications such as ChatGPT can assist with music, literature and academic work, users risk producing unoriginal content or being exposed as inauthentic if they depend on AI without strong language and comprehension skills.

He pointed to examples where political opponents had allegedly published AI-generated work without attribution, arguing that transparency is critical. “If you’re relying exclusively on ChatGPT to do your work, then when you open your mouth, you’re going to look like a fool,” Browne said.

At the same time, Browne highlighted AI’s potential to transform Antigua and Barbuda’s creative sector. He said the government has awarded dozens of scholarships in AI and computer science, supported training for local artists, and sees the technology as levelling the playing field for musicians who previously lacked access to costly production resources.

While praising AI’s capacity to boost creativity and innovation, Browne underlined that Antigua and Barbuda would pursue a **balanced approach** —promoting its benefits while ensuring regulation prevents harmful misuse.
