More than 40 Antiguan and Barbudan students studying in Jamaica have been relocated to the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel as Hurricane Melissa strengthens and threatens to impact the island.

The precautionary move, coordinated by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda Students’ Association (ABSA), is intended to safeguard students during the storm’s passage.

So far, 46 students have taken shelter at the Kingston-based hotel under an arrangement covering two nights’ accommodation and meals, provided that students present a valid Antiguan passport and university identification.

ABSA Public Relations Officer Rohan Telemaque said bringing everyone together in one secure location ensures safety and better coordination.

“It helps the overall ABSA body having everyone in one spot so if there is need for emergency evacuation we can all leave together,” Telemaque said.

The Antiguan government is working closely with student leaders to monitor the storm and provide additional assistance if required. Officials reiterated their commitment to protecting nationals studying overseas, especially during emergencies.

Jamaican authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant as Hurricane Melissa, recently upgraded from a tropical storm, is expected to unleash heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding across parts of the island in the coming days.
