LETTER: Are the Two Pit Bulls That Bit Shabo Still Alive?

    Dear Editor,

Inquiring minds really want to know: are the two pit bulls that mauled poor Shabo still alive and barking? From all reports reaching the public, these dogs are still in fine voice, raising noise in the same yard as if nothing ever happened.

Let’s be clear: this was not a little nip or playful bite. Shabo was attacked — badly enough to end up in hospital, shaken, scarred, and lucky to be alive. These dogs didn’t mistake her for a chew toy; they treated her like a Sunday lunch.

Now we understand the owner — who happens to be Shabo’s aunt — reportedly said she needs to keep the dogs to protect her disabled son and elderly father, especially given the rise in crime. Fair enough, we all want to feel safe in our homes. But surely there must be a better way to defend your family than by keeping two proven biters who nearly turned your niece into headlines.

Protection is one thing, but what happens if next time, instead of barking, they decide to “protect” by pouncing again — this time fatally? Will we then hear, “Oh, they were such gentle dogs, never bothered anyone before”?

The authorities can’t just shrug this off. If a dog attacks once, it’s a warning. Twice could be a tragedy. And if the dogs are truly alive and well, the police and animal control need to step in and decide whether they should remain part of polite society — or be put down humanely before someone else ends up in the emergency room.

We love our pets, yes. But Shabo’s life matters too. And while the aunt says she needs those pit bulls for protection, right now it feels like the community needs protection from them.

    Sincerely,

A Very Concerned (and Slightly Terrified) Citizen
