Antigua and Barbuda will host its first public HIV symposium on November 26 as health officials move to address a recent rise in infections.
The AIDS Secretariat said the event, themed “Overcoming Disturbances, Transforming the AIDS Response,” aims to boost public awareness and strengthen prevention efforts after the country recorded about 25 new cases earlier this year.
Dr. Maria Pereira, Clinical Care Coordinator, said the symposium is designed as a two-way discussion. “We’re going to be talking with the public. They’re going to be asking us questions… any question that they need answered, they can get it done at that symposium,” she said.
The event marks a shift from previous years, when sessions targeted only healthcare providers.
Dr. Pereira noted that after years of declining numbers, infections have begun to rise again, pointing to unprotected sex as the likely cause. She urged residents to get tested, noting that HIV testing is available daily at the AIDS Secretariat or privately. “The test takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and it’s a simple pinprick test,” she said. She added that continued education among young people will be key to reversing current trends.
The symposium will take place at the Multipurpose Centre and will feature several leading practitioners.
