A man with a criminal history of robbery has been handed a 30-month prison sentence for attacking and robbing a British pensioner who was enjoying a shore excursion in the nation’s capital.

Junior Emmanuel of Federation Road learned his fate in the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court today where Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel imposed the custodial sentence for the brazen daylight robbery that occurred late last year.

The court heard that on the afternoon of November 29, 2025, the elderly UK visitor was exploring the historic streets of St. John’s while her cruise ship prepared for departure when Emmanuel targeted her near the iconic Cathedral Church.

In the attack on Charles Henry Lane, he yanked the woman’s fanny pack from behind with such aggression that she was thrown to the ground as the strap gave way. Emmanuel made off with the bag containing her travel documents, phone, and money—a haul worth approximately $1,400 EC.

Hours later, a passerby discovered the discarded fanny pack and passport and ensured they were returned to the tourist’s vessel. Meanwhile, law enforcement tracked down and arrested Emmanuel that same day.

Emmanuel, whose criminal record shows he is no stranger to robbery offences, will serve two years and six months with time already spent in custody since early December being deducted from his sentence.
