    Harold Christopher Carter, Last of the 39ers, Laid to Rest

    An Official Funeral and Thanksgiving Service was held for Harold Christoper Carter MH at the St Andrew’s Anglican Church on Thursday 19th March 2026.

    The last surviving 39er Mr Carter passed away on 26th December 2025.

    The 39ers were the men and women who founded the Antigua Trades and Labour Union, the first workers union in Antigua and Barbuda.

    Harold Christoper Carter MH was part of a group of thirteen men who were arrested in 1951 for leading a protest against the brutal and oppressive plantocracy system.

    Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne remarked to Mr Carter in January 2020, “you represent the struggle and sacrifices made for the progress and development that Antigua & Barbuda enjoys today.”

    Notable officials in attendance for Harold Christoper Carter’s Official Funeral included Governor General of Antigua & Barbuda His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne, President of the Senate Hon. Alincia Williams-Grant, Sir Molwyn Joseph, Hon. E.P Chet Green, Hon. Maria Browne, Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers, newly elected Member of Parliament Randy Baltimore, and Senator Hon. Johnathan Joseph.
