Cabinet Rejects ‘Inducement’ Claims as Election Measures Expand

The government has rejected suggestions that recent policy measures are intended to influence voters ahead of general elections, insisting they are part of a long-standing record of governance.

Responding to questions during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant dismissed concerns that increased visibility of projects and initiatives could be viewed as inducements.

“Inducement — the Gaston Browne administration has a track record of working for the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” Merchant said.

He added, “There is no one who can criticize this government for the plans and policies that it has implemented thus far.”

Merchant said the measures being rolled out align with policies pursued since the administration took office in 2014 and are not tied to the election cycle, even as the country prepares to go to the polls.

“You would see the trend of the administration has been just that… it just so happens that now is the time for an election,” he said.

He pointed to global pressures, including ongoing conflicts and economic volatility, arguing that government interventions are aimed at cushioning their impact on citizens.

“These policies and decisions are being implemented… in line with what the government has been doing over the years,” Merchant said.

The comments come as Antigua and Barbuda formally enters the election period following the dissolution of Parliament, with general elections expected within 90 days.
