    Matthew congratulates swimmers after strong CARIFTA Aquatics opening

    Madison MacMillan and Ellie Shaw secured Antigua and Barbuda’s first medals at the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships in Martinique, both earning silver on Sunday.

    MacMillan placed second in the Girls 15–17 800m freestyle (9:32), while Shaw took silver in the 200m breaststroke (2:43).

    The 14-member team had a strong showing overall, with seven swimmers reaching finals and several posting personal best times across events.

    EARLIER, Sports Minister Daryll Matthew has congratulated Antigua and Barbuda’s swimmers following a strong showing on the opening day of the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships.

    In a statement, Matthew said: “On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, I congratulate Team Antigua and Barbuda on an excellent showing on Day 1 at the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships.”

    He noted that seven swimmers advanced to the finals, describing the achievement as significant.

    “Seven swimmers advancing to the finals is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to Anya DeGannes on her gold medal and age-group record, and to Madison MacMillan and Ellie Shaw for earning silver. The nation is proud of you all,” Matthew added.

    The performances mark a strong start for the national team as competition continues at the regional championships.
