Greene Says UPP Lost Because Voters Trusted ABLP’s Record of Delivery

E. P. Chet Greene says the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s commanding election victory was driven by public confidence in the party’s leadership, performance and ability to fulfill promises made to the electorate.

Speaking Saturday on the Browne and Browne Show, the ABLP chairman argued that voters rejected what he described as negativity and chose stability and proven governance instead.

Greene said the outcome of the April 30 General Election reflected “an informed electorate” and “an enlightened electorate” that decided to keep the country on what he called a positive path. He said the public recognized the difference between a government with a record of delivery and an opposition that, in his view, failed to present a convincing alternative.

He pointed to the ABLP’s fulfillment of manifesto promises since 2023, saying the party had been “checking the boxes along the way” and maintaining development as a central focus of governance. Greene described the party’s ability to keep its promises as the “hallmark” of successive Labour administrations.

In criticizing the opposition UPP, Greene said elections were “serious business” and suggested voters were not persuaded by what he characterized as political gimmicks and reliance on artificial intelligence-generated campaign material. He contrasted that with what he described as the ABLP’s proven performance record under Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

Greene also argued that trust played a major role in the election outcome. Using an analogy of choosing between two drivers, he said voters chose the team they believed could successfully guide the country forward.

“There was confidence, competence,” Greene said as he defended the government’s track record and parliamentary performance.

The ABLP won 15 of the 17 seats contested in Antigua during the election, securing a fourth consecutive term in office. Greene said the result was “no coincidence” and maintained that polling before the election showed all seats were competitive.

He added that the scale of the victory demonstrated the strength of the party’s support, even in constituencies traditionally viewed as strongholds for the opposition.
