A major agricultural dam is being developed in Bethesda as part of a wider government initiative aimed at improving water access for farmers, increasing domestic food production and strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s agricultural infrastructure.

The project was announced during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing by Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, who said Cabinet approved the agricultural and water infrastructure initiative following a presentation by Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith.

Merchant said the Bethesda Dam project is expected to serve as a flagship pilot initiative for the Ministry of Agriculture because of its location within an area containing more than 50 acres of agricultural land with strong production potential.

According to Merchant, Cabinet was also advised that construction of the dam at Table Hill in the Gordon area is nearing completion and is expected to significantly improve water availability for nearby farming activities.

The government said the projects form part of broader efforts to modernize agricultural infrastructure, improve climate resilience and reduce challenges faced by farmers during drought conditions and irregular rainfall.

Merchant said the expected outcomes include increased water storage and irrigation capacity, improved agricultural productivity and the rehabilitation of unused agricultural lands into productive farming areas.

The initiative is also intended to strengthen domestic food production and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food products.

Merchant said the projects are expected to support the cultivation of crops including pineapples, vegetables and fruit trees.

Cabinet was further advised that the Bethesda Dam initiative will support the ministry’s expanding tissue culture programme by providing areas for crop demonstrations, planting material multiplication, farmer training and climate-smart agricultural practices.

Officials said the programme is designed to provide long-term support for farmers while improving national food security and agricultural sustainability.
