Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment Minister Charles Fernandez says the expansion of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) headquarters further strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s position as a leading aviation hub in the Eastern Caribbean.

Speaking at the official opening of ECCAA’s expanded headquarters at V.C. Bird International Airport on Thursday, Fernandez said the presence of the regional aviation regulator in Antigua and Barbuda reflects the confidence placed in the country and its aviation sector.

“The presence of ECHA’s headquarters here in Antigua and Barbuda speaks volumes about the confidence placed in our country and our aviation sector,” Fernandez said. “It reinforces our position as a strategic aviation hub within the Eastern Caribbean.”

The minister said the opening of the new wing represents more than the expansion of a building, describing it as a reflection of the continued growth and modernization of civil aviation throughout the region. He noted that aviation has undergone significant changes in recent years, with increased passenger traffic, expanding airline operations and greater regulatory demands.

Fernandez said the government remains committed to ensuring ECCAA has the infrastructure and support necessary to carry out its regulatory responsibilities across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. The authority is responsible for aviation safety, security and oversight in six participating member states.

He said Antigua and Barbuda is also pursuing an ambitious expansion of its airlift, with discussions underway to secure new services from the United Arab Emirates, Latin America and South America.

According to Fernandez, the government is engaged in talks involving markets including Colombia and Panama, while anticipating continued growth from regional carriers such as LIAT and Sunshine Airways. He said the additional connectivity is expected to create opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and regional integration.

“As we pursue these ambitious goals, institutions like ECHA become even more vital,” he said, noting that safe and properly regulated aviation systems are essential to sustainable growth in air transport.

Fernandez also praised ECCAA Director General Anthony Whittier and the authority’s staff for maintaining high regulatory standards despite working for years in less-than-ideal conditions before relocating from Nugent Avenue to the airport compound.

The minister pledged continued government support for future expansion projects, noting that increasing aviation activity throughout the region will require ECCAA to continue growing its capacity and services.

The expanded headquarters was officially opened during a ceremony attended by government officials, aviation stakeholders and regional representatives. ECCAA officials said the upgraded facility will improve efficiency and strengthen the authority’s ability to oversee aviation safety and security across the OECS.
