Global Sustainable Development Goals Remain Off Track, New Report Finds
A new global assessment of progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has found that none of the 17 goals is on track to be achieved by 2030, with challenges persisting in areas ranging from climate action to environmental protection and governance.
The findings are contained in the Sustainable Development Report 2026, released by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
According to the report, less than 20 percent of SDG targets are currently on track worldwide. The assessment identifies Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Life Below Water (SDG 14), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) as among the goals facing the greatest challenges globally.
The report says progress has stagnated in several key areas since the adoption of the goals in 2015, despite widespread international support for the sustainable development agenda.
Climate-related concerns also remain a major focus, particularly for Small Island Developing States, which continue to face increasing vulnerability to rising temperatures, extreme weather events and environmental degradation.
The report notes that while countries around the world have embraced the SDGs, implementation remains a significant challenge. Survey respondents cited financing, governance, institutional capacity and the use of science and data as critical factors affecting progress.
The Sustainable Development Report is published annually and tracks progress across all 193 United Nations member states.
Antigua and Barbuda is among the countries assessed in the report and was separately ranked second globally on the Index of Countries’ Support for UN-Based Multilateralism, reflecting its strong participation in international cooperation efforts.
The report concludes that strengthening implementation mechanisms and securing adequate financing will be essential if countries are to accelerate progress toward the goals before the end of the decade.
