Sports Minister Dwayne George is calling for increased vigilance on the nation’s roads following an incident in which cyclist Tahje Browne was struck by a motorist.

In a statement on Friday, George described the incident as a “sobering reminder” that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users.

“I wish Tahje Browne a speedy and full recovery and extend my thoughts and prayers to him and his family during this time,” the minister said.

George urged motorists to be more attentive and considerate, noting that cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and drivers all have a right to use the roads safely.

“Every life matters, and every road user deserves to travel safely,” he said.

The minister said too many people focus solely on reaching their destination and forget that roads are shared spaces. He encouraged drivers to remain aware of their surroundings, obey traffic regulations and exercise patience and caution at all times.

“Cyclists have a rightful place on our roads, just as motorists do,” George said. “Their safety should never be compromised because of distraction, impatience, or negligence behind the wheel.”

He also called on the public to view the incident as a reminder of the importance of responsible road use.

“Slow down. Pay attention. Be courteous. Be responsible. A few extra seconds of care and vigilance can save a life,” he said.

George added that creating safer roads requires a collective effort and stressed the need to ensure that everyone who leaves home has the opportunity to return safely to their loved ones.
