The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has officially launched the Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative, a landmark programme that is set to transform eye health services across the nation by providing free reading glasses to thousands of adults while laying the foundation for expanded vision care for generations to come.
The initiative, conceived by Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston Browne and implemented by the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs in partnership with RestoringVision, was officially launched on Thursday at the Villa Community Center.
Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Browne described the initiative as another demonstration of his Government’s commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible to every citizen, declaring that “vision is a human right.” He announced that 25,000 reading glasses will be distributed free of charge to persons aged 40 years and older, while revealing that the programme’s second phase will see the distribution of 8,000 prescription eyeglasses for individuals requiring more advanced vision correction.
Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, the Honourable Michael Joseph, described the initiative as “the renaissance of vision care in Antigua and Barbuda,” noting that it marks the beginning of a new chapter in eye healthcare and reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to the care they need to live healthy, productive and independent lives.
Minister Joseph credited Prime Minister Browne for championing the initiative from its inception, noting that it was his vision that brought together the partnerships, resources and commitment needed to make the programme a reality.
The Minister also expressed heartfelt appreciation to RestoringVision for partnering with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, stating that the collaboration demonstrates the power of governments and international organizations working together to improve lives in meaningful and practical ways.
Beginning July 31, persons aged 40 years and older are invited to visit the Villa Community Centre and the Gray’s Green Community Centre to receive a free vision screening and, where appropriate, a complimentary pair of reading glasses. Screenings will be conducted Monday through Friday, from 9:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m., over the next two weeks. The programme will then take place at other locations across the country.
Minister Joseph emphasized that while reading glasses may appear to be a simple intervention, their impact reaches far beyond improved eyesight.
“To some, this may appear to be a simple intervention. But for the individual whose world immediately comes back into focus, it is far more than a pair of glasses. It is restored confidence. It is renewed independence. It is the ability to continue working, caring for family, participating in community life and enjoying the simple moments that make life meaningful. That is the true impact of good public health.”
The Minister stressed that the Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative extends well beyond the current distribution of reading glasses.
“The Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative has been designed with the future in mind. The distribution of reading glasses represents the first phase of a broader national effort to strengthen eye health services throughout Antigua and Barbuda.”
He explained that the Ministry is already planning the next phase of the programme, which will expand access to comprehensive eye examinations and facilitate the provision of 8,000 prescription eyeglasses for individuals whose vision needs extend beyond reading glasses.
Minister Joseph also outlined the Ministry’s vision to introduce school-based vision screening programmes to ensure children with undiagnosed vision problems are identified early.
“Every year there are children who struggle in the classroom, not because they lack intelligence or determination, but because they simply cannot see clearly. When vision problems go undetected, learning suffers, confidence declines and opportunities are lost.”
He added that investing in early detection and preventative care is essential to building a healthier nation.
“This is how we build a healthier nation—not by responding only when problems arise, but by investing in prevention, early intervention and accessible healthcare for every stage of life.”
Remarks were also delivered by His Excellency Dr. Walton Webson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, and Ambassador Keisha McGuire, Chief Global Affairs Officer at RestoringVision, both of whom underscored the importance of international partnerships in advancing global eye health and commended Antigua and Barbuda for its leadership in expanding access to vision care.
Also in attendance were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration, the Honourable E.P. Chet Greene; Permanent Secretaries Mrs. Stacey Gregg-Paige; Permanent Secretary Mr. Edson Joseph; as well as senior technical officials from the Ministry of Health, the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, and the Medical Benefits Scheme.
The Ministry also recognized the dedicated healthcare professionals, nurses, clinic teams and volunteers whose hard work has made the nationwide rollout of the initiative possible.
The Ministry of Health is encouraging all eligible persons aged 40 years and older to take advantage of this free opportunity by visiting one of the designated screening centres over the next two weeks. Citizens are also encouraged to remind their parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends to participate in the programme.
The Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative represents one of the most significant investments in eye health ever undertaken in Antigua and Barbuda. By restoring sight, expanding access to quality vision care and investing in prevention and early intervention, the Government is not only improving eyesight but it is restoring independence, strengthening families, enhancing productivity and building healthier communities for generations to come.
