Antiguan young professional Kayleen Walter has been selected as a Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellow for 2026 , joining a cohort of young leaders from across the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship is a flagship leadership development programme of the Commonwealth Leaders Academy, designed to equip emerging leaders with leadership skills, international exposure and collaborative networks to address complex challenges and contribute to sustainable development across the Commonwealth.

Walter holds an academic background in environmental studies and biological sciences and is currently pursuing legal studies. Her academic and research experience has included work in environmental protection, marine conservation, and climate resilience, with a focus on the relationship between scientific evidence, environmental policy, and decision-making.

Her recent work includes an independent research study examining microplastic pollution on selected beaches in Antigua, accompanied by a community outreach component focusing on increasing awareness of marine pollution in efforts to encourage greater public engagement as it relates to environmental issues. Her research reflects a broader interest in applying scientific research to environmental challenges facing Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking about her selection, Walter said:

“I am deeply honoured to have been selected as a Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellow for 2026. This opportunity represents not only a personal achievement, but also a chance to bring Antigua and Barbuda’s experiences, challenges and perspectives into a wider Commonwealth conversation.”

“As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Antigua and Barbuda faces environmental and climate challenges that require innovative, evidence-based approaches. I hope to use the knowledge, relationships and experience gained through the fellowship to contribute meaningfully to work on the island, particularly in environmental policy, marine conservation, and climate resilience.”

Walter’s fellowship comes during a significant year for Antigua and Barbuda’s engagement with the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Youth Forum 2026 will also take place in Antigua and Barbuda on the margins of CHOGM, providing a platform for young leaders from across the Commonwealth to engage in dialogue on issues affecting their present and future. The Forum will be held under the theme “Investing in Youth Agency–Co-Creating Pathways towards Shared Prosperity.”

For Walter, the fellowship offers an opportunity to connect her scientific background with her growing focus on public policy and leadership, while learning from young leaders working across different sectors and countries. She intends to bring the knowledge, perspectives and connections gained through the fellowship back into her work in Antigua and Barbuda, continuing to build at the intersection of science, environmental policy and public service and contributing to wider conversations on the priorities facing small island states.
