Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle says economic hardship, limited opportunities and growing financial pressure on families are helping to create conditions in which crime can take root in Antigua and Barbuda.

Pringle, addressing the recent rise in crime and gun violence, said the country must examine the economic circumstances confronting citizens, particularly young people, as part of any serious crime-prevention strategy.

“Too many families are struggling to make ends meet. Too many young people are searching for meaningful opportunities,” Pringle said.

He stressed, however, that economic difficulties should never be used to justify criminal activity.

“Let me be clear: this does not excuse criminal behavior. Those who break the law must be held accountable,” he said.

Pringle argued that tackling crime requires more than arresting and punishing offenders after crimes have already occurred.

“But responsible leadership must do more than punish crime; it must also work to prevent it,” he said.

The opposition leader said limited lawful opportunities for advancement can contribute to hopelessness among young people and create an environment in which criminal activity can flourish.

Pringle proposed targeted relief for struggling families, expanded skills development for young people, greater support for small businesses and policies aimed at creating sustainable employment.

“A young person who can see a future for himself or herself is far less likely to engage in criminal activity,” Pringle said.

He argued that these economic measures should form part of a broader national response to crime, alongside efforts to tackle illegal firearms and strengthen national security.
