Union Warns Barbados Could Lose Air Traffic Controllers Over Pay

Barbados could lose skilled air traffic controllers overseas unless they receive better pay and recognition, the National Union of Public Workers has warned.

Acting general secretary Wayne Walrond said controllers perform specialised work that is essential to aviation safety and tourism but earn significantly less than their regional counterparts.

He said controllers earning about $5,000 monthly in Barbados could receive between $8,000 and $10,000 or more elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Walrond stressed that controllers carry enormous responsibility, directing the safe take-off and landing of aircraft carrying hundreds of passengers.

He urged the government to recognise their importance to the tourism industry and improve their salaries before more attractive overseas opportunities draw them away.

Walrond also called for greater recognition of aeronautical information service officers, who provide critical information to support safe and efficient aviation operations.
