The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has congratulated Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez on his unanimous election as chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism.

Fernandez was elected during the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s annual general meeting in Guyana on October 6, marking Antigua and Barbuda’s return to the leadership of the regional tourism body for the first time in more than 15 years.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced Cabinet’s congratulations during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, saying ministers welcomed Fernandez’s selection by his regional colleagues.

Cabinet described the appointment as recognition of Fernandez’s years of leadership in Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry and the country’s continued contribution to tourism development across the Caribbean.

The unanimous election places Fernandez at the head of the council, which brings together tourism ministers and commissioners from across the region to discuss matters affecting the Caribbean tourism industry.

His appointment also gives Antigua and Barbuda a prominent leadership role within the regional organization as Caribbean destinations continue working to strengthen cooperation and advance tourism development.

According to Merchant, Cabinet viewed Fernandez’s selection as an acknowledgment of both his experience and Antigua and Barbuda’s importance within the regional tourism sector.

The government noted that the appointment represents a significant milestone, with the country assuming leadership of the council for the first time in more than a decade and a half.

Fernandez, who serves as Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, will now take on additional regional responsibilities alongside his national portfolio.

Cabinet extended its congratulations to the minister following the vote of confidence demonstrated by his fellow Caribbean tourism officials.
