Trinidad and Tobago’s Defence Force has intercepted a speedboat carrying 411 packages of marijuana weighing approximately 511 pounds, with an estimated street value of $3.75 million.
Three people aboard the vessel were apprehended during the operation, according to the U.S. military’s Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF South).
In a statement shared Thursday by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the task force said Trinidad and Tobago authorities detected the high-speed vessel while targeting suspected illegal drug trafficking.
An interceptor vessel subsequently gained control of the boat, allowing authorities to seize the marijuana and apprehend the three occupants.
The operation was highlighted as an example of cooperation between Caribbean security forces and the United States in combating drug trafficking across the region.
JIATF South praised Trinidad and Tobago for its role in the interception, saying such partnerships strengthen regional security and demonstrate the importance of countries working together to disrupt illegal trafficking networks.
The task force said its detection and monitoring activities support U.S. Southern Command-led counter-narcotics operations across the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
The authorities did not disclose the identities of the three people apprehended, the precise location of the interception or whether formal charges had been filed.
The operation comes amid closer security cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States, including joint efforts to combat transnational criminal networks and strengthen maritime surveillance.
