Antigua and Barbuda was among 15 Caribbean countries represented at high-level talks with the United States in Washington, D.C., as the Trump administration announced more than US$340 million in regional initiatives aimed at strengthening security, economic development, healthcare and critical infrastructure.

The Caribbean Dialogue to Advance Shared Security and Prosperity, held on October 15, brought together senior Caribbean officials and representatives of the United States government to discuss shared challenges and opportunities for greater cooperation.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau hosted the discussions, which focused on energy security, economic growth, telecommunications, disaster preparedness, healthcare cooperation and efforts to combat drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations.

The U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown highlighted the meeting in a social media statement on Monday, sharing photographs of Caribbean representatives gathered alongside American officials.

According to the embassy, the dialogue addressed several issues affecting the region, including the fight against what Washington describes as narco-terrorists and transnational criminal organizations.

The meeting comes amid continued efforts by the United States to deepen its security and economic relationships with Caribbean governments.

A major outcome of the talks was the announcement of more than US$340 million in American funding and investment initiatives intended to benefit the wider Caribbean.

The commitments include US$175.8 million for secure undersea telecommunications cables connecting the Caribbean and Central America, US$61.5 million to strengthen the region’s healthcare workforce and US$103 million under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative.

Of the security funding, US$37 million is earmarked for protecting critical digital infrastructure and ports and combating illegal fishing, while US$66 million is intended to strengthen law enforcement, border protection and efforts against transnational criminal organizations.

The funding represents regional commitments rather than allocations to individual countries, and no specific amount has been publicly identified for Antigua and Barbuda.

The discussions also included meetings between Caribbean delegations and American business leaders to explore investment opportunities in energy, ports, critical minerals and digital infrastructure.

Landau said Washington intends to strengthen commercial ties with the region by encouraging greater American private-sector investment.

Caribbean Community Chairman and Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, who addressed the gathering, called for the discussions to produce practical benefits for Caribbean citizens.

Pierre identified affordable electricity, job creation, stronger healthcare systems, disaster preparedness and cooperation against illegal firearms trafficking as priorities for the region.

He also urged continued attention to Haiti’s security crisis and immigration issues affecting Caribbean nationals.

The October 15 meeting followed discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CARICOM leaders in Saint Kitts and Nevis earlier this year.

Washington has also announced plans for further investment discussions in 2027, as both sides seek to expand economic cooperation.

The U.S. State Department confirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in the dialogue, although the country’s specific funding prospects and any bilateral agreements arising from the meeting have not been publicly detailed.
