EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) will bring creativity, climate advocacy, and community-driven solutions to the forefront of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 through its interactive session,
“Creative Advocacy for Climate Justice: Transforming Art into Climate Action,”
at the Commonwealth People’s Forum.
The session will explore how art, storytelling, journalism, and creative expression can strengthen environmental education, influence public narratives, inform policy discussions, and inspire meaningful climate action across the Commonwealth.
Grounded in equity, inclusion, and community empowerment, the session will convene creatives, journalists, technical experts, women and youth leaders, and community advocates to examine how creative approaches can make complex environmental challenges more accessible, engaging, and actionable.
As climate change continues to affect livelihoods, ecosystems, and communities across the Commonwealth, ESFN is advancing the conversation on the role of creativity in building public understanding, progressing policy, encouraging participation, and connecting environmental knowledge with practical solutions.
Transforming environmental stories into climate action
A central feature of the session will be a showcase of ESFN’s Creative Expressions Competitions, highlighting wetlands and upcycled canvas as platforms for environmental education and public engagement.
Through these creative initiatives, participants will explore how visual art, photography, storytelling, and other forms of expression can communicate the importance of biodiversity conservation, responsible waste management, and climate resilience while encouraging communities to take action.
The showcase will demonstrate how creative engagement can connect environmental advocacy with cultural identity, local knowledge, and the lived experiences of people directly affected by environmental challenges.
The session will examine several interconnected priorities, including climate resilience and adaptation; food security and sustainable livelihoods; wetlands and biodiversity conservation; plastic pollution and illegal dumping; the creative industries and economic opportunity; gender equity and inclusive participation; media and environmental storytelling; and youth leadership in community-driven climate action.
Connecting climate justice with the creative economy
Beyond raising awareness, ESFN will facilitate discussions on the economic dimensions of creative advocacy and the conditions necessary for creatives to sustain their work while contributing to environmental and social change.
Artists, journalists, and other creative professionals play an important role in shaping public discourse, documenting community experiences, and communicating the urgency of climate action. However, sustaining this contribution requires access to opportunities, professional development, partnerships, resources, and viable income streams.
The session will therefore create space for participants to share active projects, practical experiences, and lessons learned, while identifying opportunities for collaboration across Commonwealth countries.
By connecting environmental advocacy with the creative economy, ESFN seeks to encourage approaches that recognise creativity not only as a communication tool, but also as a source of livelihoods, innovation, cultural expression, and community resilience.
Advancing equity through creativity and community knowledge
ESFN’s approach recognises that effective climate action requires the participation of people whose experiences and perspectives are often underrepresented in decision-making.
The session will consider how women, girls, and young people, can contribute to climate solutions through inclusive and accessible platforms for participation. It will explore how creative industries can support sustainable livelihoods while ensuring that diverse voices help shape environmental narratives and policy conversations.
For ESFN, climate justice requires more than acknowledging environmental challenges. It involves creating opportunities for communities to influence the conversations, decisions, and solutions that affect their futures.
“Climate action is strengthened when science, policy, creativity, and community knowledge work together. Every story told, image captured, song written, and idea expressed has the potential to change how people understand their environment and respond to the challenges we face. Through this session, we want to explore how creative expression can move beyond awareness to inspire collaboration, influence decisions, and support meaningful action,” said Britney McDonald, Portfolio Manager of EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network.
From local action to Commonwealth collaboration
Based in Antigua and Barbuda, ESFN works at the intersection of environmental stewardship, education, creative expression, community engagement, equity, and sustainable livelihoods. Its participation in the Commonwealth People’s Forum reflects the organisation’s commitment to contributing Caribbean perspectives to wider discussions on sustainable development, climate resilience, and community empowerment.
Creative advocacy is an invitation to see the environment differently, tell our stories boldly, and build solutions collectively.
