St. John’s Rural South MP Daryll Matthew has expressed heartbreak over Tuesday’s fatal shooting of two members of the Rastafarian community in Creekside, urging residents to remain calm as authorities investigate.
Matthew, who is also Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Education, condemned the violence in a Facebook statement following the deaths of a man and a 19-year-old woman.
“I am heartbroken by the tragic shooting of two members of the Rastafarian community in Creek Side. My thoughts are with them, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this horrific incident,” Matthew said.
The two victims were reportedly shot shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday and transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where they were pronounced dead.
Matthew acknowledged the fear and frustration the killings could generate within the community.
“People deserve to feel safe in their homes and community,” he said.
“I strongly condemn this violence and ask everyone in Creek Side to remain calm, look out for one another, and avoid speculation as the authorities investigate.”
The MP also appealed for compassion and unity in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“Let us meet this difficult moment with compassion and a commitment to peace and safety in our community.”
Police have not yet released an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the double homicide.
