It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Raphael “Sonny” Evanson. Raphael worked selflessly to support the people of Antigua who, even during his years abroad, remained deep in his heart. He was a son, brother, husband, and father, and while his career in medicine was at the forefront of his accomplishments, his quiet ways masked hidden talents in writing and community service.

Raphael’s long career in medicine spanned the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal to the Winter Medical Clinic and St John Hospice in Antigua. In his retirement, Raphael volunteered his time and energy helping countless patients all over the island, often never charging for his expertise and time.

Raphael was also an active member of Antigua’s Bodhicharya group, and his years of service to the Buddhist and meditation community in Antigua touched the hearts of many. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and colleagues. His family is forever grateful to the St John Hospice, where he received loving care and attention in his final days. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal service. May he rest in eternal peace.

We invite you to celebrate his life and legacy by donating to St John Hospice. Give thanks.
