The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved plans to establish a Cognitive Behavioural Centre aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment and support services for people living with autism and other neurodivergent disorders.

The announcement was made during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing by Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, who said the initiative was brought forward by Health Minister Sir Michael Joseph as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare response to developmental disorders.

Merchant said Cabinet was told that many families in Antigua and Barbuda continue to face significant challenges accessing adequate treatment, therapy and developmental support services for persons living with autism and related conditions.

“Many parents and caregivers continue to experience considerable emotional, financial and social strain due to the limited availability of specialised services and trained professionals within the country,” Merchant said.

In response, Cabinet approved plans for the establishment of a Cognitive Behavioural Centre dedicated to the early detection, assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorder and other neurodivergent conditions.

According to Merchant, the Ministry of Health has already begun a targeted recruitment drive to secure qualified professionals for the facility, including occupational therapists, speech pathologists and neuropsychologists.

The proposed centre is expected to provide specialised interventions and support services for both children and adults diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. It will also offer counselling, educational guidance and support for parents and caregivers.

Merchant said Cabinet was advised that early diagnosis and intervention are critical in improving developmental outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with autism and related conditions.

He said the establishment of the centre forms part of the government’s broader commitment to expanding specialised healthcare services and improving support systems for vulnerable families.

Cabinet members reportedly welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward addressing an area of healthcare that has long required greater national attention and investment.

Merchant said the centre is expected to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s ability to identify and manage neurodivergent disorders at an earlier stage, improving long-term outcomes for patients and families.
