Interns Fishing Trip by Emerald David

With just a few days remaining until the closure of this year’s internship program, our interns participated in the most anticipated activity for the entirety of the internship program. On Tuesday 27, the interns and their mentors embarked on a fishing trip which was facilitated by fisherman Mr Euton Henry with support from another fisherman and the Coast Guard branch of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force.

Mr Henry and a Coast Guard officer spoke briefly with the interns about the importance of safety and exercising caution while on the vessels. Everyone was divided into groups of three where they eagerly boarded their respective fishing vessels. Excitement and nervousness beamed on their faces as this fishing trip was the first for many.

The exercise with Mr. Henry, gave the interns hands-on experience about the fishing industry. On his vessel, the interns got the opportunity to steer the boat, absorb the views of certain parts of the island that can only be seen by boat, learned about the fish pot method and the more suitable areas to fish in our waters. Although our time on the water was a bit short, the interns had an amazing day catching fish, setting the bait, assisting with deploying the fish pot and learning more about the industry from an experienced and well- versed fisherman.

It is necessary to note that the fishing industry is pivotal for the strengthening of food security, the sustainability of our marine resources, the provision of food for our nation and the growth of our economy.

Their interests were peaked throughout the day with only a few becoming nauseous but pushing through. The day ended with encouragement from Mr Henry about being more involved in the sector and supporting our local Fisher folks.
