Emergency work on a transmission tower in Pigotts prompted APUA to temporarily reroute sections of its electricity network Wednesday, disrupting power and reducing water production.

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority said the work involved replacing a damaged lightning arrester. Some communities lost electricity briefly as feeders were moved to other circuits to give repair crews safe access to the equipment.

APUA also sought help from selected businesses to limit pressure on the network by operating on standby generators during the repairs.

Water production was scaled back as well, with the Barnacle Point and Ffryes reverse osmosis plants taken out of operation because of their heavy electricity demands. Both plants are expected to resume production after the electrical work is finished.

Repairs were scheduled for completion before noon. APUA warned that another 15- to 20-minute outage could occur when the electricity network is restored to its regular configuration.

The authority thanked customers for cooperating and apologised for the disruption.
