The government is considering expanding Antigua and Barbuda’s public surveillance system as part of a broader response to a recent surge in gun violence.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said over the weekend that approximately 200 cameras are already operating across the country, but wider coverage may be necessary to deter criminals and help police identify suspects.

Browne cited the recent daylight shooting near the usually busy West Bus Station as evidence of increasingly brazen criminal activity. Two young men were injured in the incident, which remains under police investigation.

The shooting was among several violent incidents that have intensified concerns about gangs, illegal firearms and youth violence.

Additional crime-fighting measures are expected to be considered at Monday’s meeting involving law enforcement, border-control agencies and the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

Browne cautioned that surveillance technology alone would not solve the problem, stressing that residents with information must also cooperate with investigators.
