A high wind advisory has been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands as Tropical Disturbance AL92 moves through the region.
The advisory will take effect at about 8 p.m. Friday and remain in place until approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services.
Forecaster Dale Destin said the passage of AL92 is tightening the pressure gradient across the area, resulting in strong, gusty winds. Exposed coastal waters and elevated and open areas on the windward sides of the islands are expected to experience the strongest conditions.
Easterly winds of 28 to 44 km/h, or 17 to 28 mph, are forecast, with gale- to storm-force gusts reaching approximately 69 km/h, or 43 mph.
The most intense winds are expected between midnight Friday and midmorning Saturday.
Although the overall risk to life and property is considered low, the Meteorological Services warned that the conditions could make some outdoor activities uncomfortable or dangerous. Strong gusts could affect people’s balance, particularly in exposed elevated areas and near cliff edges.
High winds could also result in falling or blowing objects, hazardous seas, soil erosion, vehicular accidents and disruptions to businesses, sporting events and transportation. Air travel could be affected, while marine transportation is expected to face the greatest risk of disruption.
Residents are advised to secure loose and lightweight outdoor objects that could be blown away. Motorists should drive cautiously, and members of the public should avoid exposed elevated locations while the advisory remains in effect.
The Meteorological Services defines a high wind advisory as notice that sustained winds of between 40 and 48 km/h, or 25 to 31 mph, with stronger gusts are imminent or already occurring.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official forecasts and updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and local media outlets.
