Utilities Minister Melford Nicholas is urging households across Antigua and Barbuda to maintain enough stored water to last at least three days in case of disruptions to the public supply.

Nicholas said homeowners should invest in water-storage systems even after the Antigua Public Utilities Authority reaches its targeted production level of 14 million gallons per day.

He said maintaining a household reserve would give residents greater security during equipment failures, maintenance work or other unexpected interruptions.

“I would still encourage homeowners to build that resiliency and to keep at least three days’ water supply available in the event that there is a disruption or discontinuation for any reason whatsoever,” Nicholas said.

The minister noted that the government has already distributed 600-gallon water tanks to families through several members of Parliament, including residents in his constituency.

Nicholas said households should not rely entirely on the government or APUA to meet their immediate needs during every disruption.

He pointed to the new Booby Alley apartment development, where individual water tanks have been installed for residents, as an example of good planning.

The minister said adequate household storage would allow families to manage temporary interruptions without facing immediate distress or making urgent complaints to the utility company.
