Protesters to Demand Answers Over Rashawn Shabazz’s Death and Other Unresolved Cases Today

A public protest demanding accountability for the death of Rashawn Shabazz and answers in several other unresolved cases will take place in St. John’s today.

Organisers say protesters will begin picketing outside His Majesty’s Prison at 8:30 a.m. before moving to the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

Shabazz died after an incident at the prison while he was in custody. Organisers say his family deserves answers but stressed that the demonstration will also represent families affected by unsolved murders, missing-person cases, deaths involving police and other deaths in custody.

The protest will also highlight concerns about allegations involving prison officers, sexual abuse, rape, violent crime and corruption.

“This is not about politics. It is about accountability, justice and the value of human life,” organisers said.

They are encouraging members of the public to support families who have repeatedly sought information from the authorities without receiving the answers they believe they deserve.

Free protest T-shirts are available, with arrangements for collection being made by telephone or WhatsApp at 720-2557.

The demonstration is being held under the slogan: “When Justice Fails, the People Must Rise!”
