Families in Antigua and Barbuda will get temporary tax relief on selected school supplies and food items as they prepare for the new academic year.

The Cabinet has approved a zero per cent Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax rate on qualifying items on 28 and 29 August.

The measure will cover school essentials including uniforms, shoes, bags, notebooks, writing materials, calculators, geometry sets, art supplies and information technology and home economics equipment.

The Inland Revenue Department is expected to issue guidance on which products qualify and how businesses should apply the temporary tax exemption.

The government says the initiative is intended to reduce the financial burden on households facing increased back-to-school expenses.

A similar two-day tax reduction was introduced in April ahead of the reopening of schools after the Easter break.

The measure forms part of wider government support for families, including the School Uniform Grant Programme and School Meals Programme.
