A man who was charged with battery and malicious damage, is expected to reappear before acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason today to be sentenced.

Travis Phillip was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison last week Tuesday pending the magistrate’s verdict.

Phillip pleaded not guilty to beating his ex-girlfriend and damaging her wig and jewellery amounting to $872.

The man and his ex were a attending fete at Fort James on November 24 when the incident occurred.

The court heard that the complainant was talking with male when Phillip approached her and whispered something in her ear.

She pushed him off and while she was in conversation with another person Phillip went up to her and attacked her from behind. In the midst of the fracas, a police officer had to intervene to separate them.

As a result of the altercation, the woman sustained abrasions to her face and arm.

When Phillip was being questioned about the incident by the magistrate he initially gave the impression that he did not know the victim and that the fight did not involve him.

“I don’t even remember seeing the lady,” Phillip said.

He alleged that he was present during the “scruffling” but could not remember anything that happened. However, he later admitted that he and the victim had an altercation.

Phillip claimed that he was under a cabana when the fight started, which he said happened over his ex.

The accused complained that he too received injuries to his face and eyes.
