The UWI Five Islands Campus, Antigua and Barbuda, Thursday, May 8, 2025. — Teams from The University of the West Indies will stage a three-day volleyball tournament later this month, pitting campus teams against each other and local clubs in what organizers hope will become an annual showcase.

The UWI Volleyball Invitational Games 2025, scheduled for May 23-25 at the YMCA Sports Complex, will feature matches between the Mona and Five Islands campuses, along with participation from top Antiguan club teams.

“This tournament represents a significant step in developing volleyball across our campuses and strengthening ties with local communities,” said Oshane Grant, Chair of the Local Organising Committee.

The event, co-hosted by the Office of the Campus Principal of The UWI Five Islands Campus, UWI Faculty of Sports, The UWI Mona Volleyball Team and the Antigua & Barbuda Volleyball Association, will welcome local powerhouse clubs Pytonz, Da Storming Lions, Stoneville, Da Squad and Jets.

The competition begins on Friday afternoon with matches continuing through Sunday evening. Organizers have scheduled the competition across the three days, with winners receiving trophies and medals.

This marks the first major sports tournament hosted by The UWI Five Islands Campus since its establishment in Antigua and Barbuda. The UWI Mona Volleyball team from Jamaica enters as favorites based on their established volleyball program.

Local volleyball fans anticipate strong showings from Antiguan clubs following their strong showings in recently held local leagues.

The tournament which was originally part of UWI Games is part of the resurgence of intercampus activities which were suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges faced by the regional university. UWI Games The tournament runs May 23 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., May 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and May 25 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
