Antigua Sailing Week has paid tribute to Ms. Ethelyn Phillip, a beloved and influential figure whose decades-long dedication helped shape the regatta into one of the Caribbean’s most iconic sailing events.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Ms. Ethelyn Phillip, a foundational figure in the history of Antigua Sailing Week.

Raised in English Harbour, Antigua – the area that has now become the key sailing ground of the region, Ms. Phillip played an integral role in the early days of the regatta. The Final Prizegiving and the Lord Nelson’s Ball were managed by her and her team at Admiral’s Inn for decades. Her background in hospitality helped to shape the spirit and structure of what has become one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated sailing events.

Additionally, since the early 1970’s Ms. Phillip was responsible for the ASW Schools Art Competition, the events longest running community initiative by organizing, judging and planning the prize giving for the participants. She also used her charm to encourage yacht skippers to agree to host youth on board to tour their yachts – an awe inspiring experience for many over the years.

Her dedication to detail, warmth, and unwavering support were instrumental in building not only the event itself but the sense of community that surrounds it.

In 2020 she was the recipient of the Jan Santos award, which honours those who have shown exceptional dedication to Antigua Sailing Week.

Antigua Sailing Week owes much to Ms. Phillip’s passion for excellence and her belief in the power of sport to unite people across oceans and generations.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

May her legacy continue to inspire.
