The government of Antigua and Barbuda is moving ahead with plans to acquire a dedicated cargo aircraft, with an official update expected from Prime Minister Gaston Browne at the next Cabinet sitting.

Although the matter was not discussed during Wednesday’s meeting, Director General in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, confirmed that the Prime Minister is leading negotiations related to the aircraft purchase.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen regional logistics and food security.

Merchant noted that the aircraft will be operated in collaboration with LIAT, with the airline expected to play a key role in cargo movement across the region.

The government is also reportedly examining the possibility of establishing maritime transport links between Antigua and Dominica, among other OECS countries.

The aim is to improve the movement of agricultural goods and reduce reliance on international supply chains.

Officials say the initiative is being driven in part by global disruptions in shipping and the need for more resilient regional trade systems.

The Prime Minister is expected to provide further details on both the cargo plane and maritime proposals in the coming weeks.
