A supermarket on Lower All Saints Road has come under scrutiny after health inspectors discovered rat droppings, the stench of urine, and a large stockpile of expired food items during a surprise visit by the Central Board of Health (CBH).

According to Chief Health Inspector Sharon Martin, the inspection revealed a serious rodent and cockroach infestation, with expired goods deliberately hidden behind items with current dates.

The expired items were seized and taken to the Cooks Sanitary Landfill for destruction. Martin said the visit was part of ongoing unannounced inspections across the island, meant to catch businesses operating under their usual conditions. However, sources suggested that the operation may have been prompted by a tip-off.

“It is against the law to offer for sale anything unwholesome for public use,” Martin stated, warning that repeat violations could result in prosecution or closure of the business.

The supermarket, which has not been named, had reportedly been selling expired food to unsuspecting customers. Martin urged the public to carefully check labels when shopping and advised supermarkets to remove expired stock to avoid endangering public health.
