The National Office for Disaster Services (NODS) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) have partnered to host a key workshop on disaster risk knowledge and early warning systems in Antigua and Barbuda.

The two-day event at the Trade Winds Hotel followed a virtual session last week and forms part of the global “Early Warnings for All” initiative.

It brought together stakeholders from sectors such as tourism, social transformation, gender affairs, law enforcement, meteorology, and disability advocacy.

Facilitated by UNDRR Risk Knowledge Officer Mario Salgado Galvez, the sessions focused on improving data management, assessing damage and loss, and prioritising vulnerable communities in disaster planning.

NODS Director Sherrod James referenced recent local disasters to highlight gaps and successful interventions, including public campaigns to clear drains and waterways.

UNDRR Technical Consultant Mali Barnes underscored the need for inclusivity, saying, “We strive to ensure that no one is left behind.”

The initiative aims to build resilience and encourage proactive disaster management nationwide.
