    LETTER: My Journey with UWI Global Campus: Pride, Sacrifice, and a Call for Better Support

    Continuing my education has been one of my greatest accomplishments. From completing my Associate’s degree to now pursuing my Bachelor’s, with hopes of one day earning my Master’s, this journey has been rewarding and eye-opening.

    I am currently enrolled at the University of the West Indies Global Campus, which offers strictly online courses. This flexible model benefits working professionals who must balance studies with employment and family life. What makes it especially meaningful is the regional unity it fosters. I attend classes alongside students from across the Caribbean, building connections that remind us education is a tool for both personal and regional development.

    Still, higher education is not without sacrifice. Students invest significant time and money, often while managing long work hours and family responsibilities. For that reason, proper support and feedback are not optional; they are essential.

    This semester, I voiced concerns about difficulties I encountered, only to be ignored. At the university level, I do not expect to be spoon-fed, but timely and constructive feedback on assignments should be a standard. Unfortunately, students are often belittled and downright insulted when they voice questions or seek clarification during class. Instead, asking questions of course instructors sometimes feels like an attack, creating a culture of hostility rather than growth.

    UWI Global Campus has undeniable strengths flexibility, access, and a diverse Caribbean community, but those strengths must be matched by accountability and respect for students. We sacrifice our time, money, and energy because we believe in education and its power to transform our lives and our societies.

    As I continue my journey, I remain proud of what I’ve achieved and hopeful for what lies ahead. But I also call for a stronger, more supportive learning environment. One that fosters respect, open dialogue, and genuine partnership between instructors and students, ensuring the spirit of higher education is upheld in both principle and practice.
