The United States has extended congratulations to the people of Antigua and Barbuda as the twin-island nation marks its 44th Independence Day.

In a statement issued on Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening ties with St John’s, highlighting cooperation on regional security and economic development.

“The United States values our partnership with Antigua and Barbuda in advancing regional security through continued cooperation to stem the flow of illegal guns and drugs, counter illegal immigration, and disrupt transnational criminal networks,” the statement read.

Rubio cited initiatives such as the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative as key areas of collaboration, noting that both nations are working to “strengthen border security and safeguard our citizens.”

The Secretary of State also pointed to ongoing efforts to expand commercial relations, particularly in the energy sector. He said the US private-sector partnership on LNG energy could serve as a model for the region, boosting both energy security and business opportunities.

“We look forward to deepening our collaboration to create safer communities and greater opportunities for all our citizens,” Rubio added.

Antigua and Barbuda gained independence from Britain on 1 November 1981.
