Nurse Claire Althea Frances West has been conferred the _Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit (GCM)_ for her outstanding service in nursing and community development, recognizing more than 50 years of compassionate and dedicated care to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
The honour was presented during the National Awards Ceremony at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium as part of the nation’s 44th Independence celebrations.
According to her citation, Nurse West “has devoted more than five decades of compassionate and exemplary service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.” She began her career in 1972 at the Holberton Hospital, serving with unwavering commitment across nearly every ward — including the Children’s Ward, Operating Theatre, and Casualty Department.
Her years of service have been defined by professionalism, empathy, and leadership in nursing, earning her respect across the health sector and in the wider community. Beyond hospital walls, West has been an active figure in community health outreach and mentorship, helping to train and guide younger nurses while promoting excellence in patient care.
The citation praised her as “a shining example of devotion to duty and humanity,” noting that her lifelong service embodies the highest ideals of compassion and national pride.
In recognition of her enduring contribution to public health and community service, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda awarded her one of the nation’s highest distinctions — honouring a career that has touched countless lives and strengthened the foundation of the country’s healthcare system.
