The government is planning a comprehensive overhaul of water infrastructure in the capital, including the replacement of aging pipelines, reconstruction of sidewalks and resurfacing of roads, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne outlined plans to modernize the water distribution network as part of a broader urban renewal initiative for St. John’s.

He said sections of the existing system, some decades old, will be removed and replaced to improve reliability and reduce leaks. The project will also include upgrades to storage tanks and the digitization of the water distribution system to better monitor supply and pressure levels.

The overhaul is expected to coincide with improvements to surface infrastructure, including rebuilding sidewalks and resurfacing roads in affected areas once underground works are completed.

Browne said the coordinated approach is intended to avoid repeated excavation of newly paved roads and ensure long-term durability.

The initiative forms part of a wider push to modernize public utilities and improve service delivery in the capital, as the government seeks to strengthen infrastructure to meet growing demand from residents and businesses.
