United Progressive Party candidate Alex Browne says the Rupert “King Swallow” Filo Highway should remain unchanged, arguing that the roadway honors one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most influential cultural figures.

Speaking during an interview on Observer Radio ahead of the March 16 St. Philip’s North by-election, Browne said the highway must continue to carry the name of the late calypso legend Sir Rupert “King Swallow” Philo.

“Rupert ‘King Swallow’ Philo is a national icon whose contribution to our culture and music cannot be overstated,” Browne said. “That highway should remain in his name as a permanent tribute to his legacy.”

Sir Rupert “King Swallow” Philo, widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated calypsonians, died in September 2020 at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness. He rose to prominence with songs blending social commentary and political satire, beginning with the track “Raphael Trujillo.”

Over decades in the music industry, Swallow produced numerous hits including _Fire in the Backseat_ , _Subway Jam_ , _Party in Space_ and _Satan Coming Down_ , earning admiration from audiences across the Caribbean and beyond.

He captured Antigua’s calypso crown four times—in 1973, 1977, 1978 and 1985—and won the Road March title five times, cementing his reputation as a dominant force in both calypso and soca.

Swallow was later knighted by Antigua and Barbuda in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country’s cultural development and the art form of calypso.

Browne said preserving the highway’s name would ensure that younger generations remain aware of the cultural impact of the late artist.

“King Swallow helped shape the soundtrack of Antigua and Barbuda,” Browne said. “Honouring him in this way keeps that history alive.”

Browne is contesting the St. Philip’s North seat in the March 16 by-election against Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party candidate Randy Baltimore. The vote will determine who fills the parliamentary vacancy in the constituency.
